For five years, competitors had been writing the company’s first impression

A confidential case about ending a cross-market black PR campaign - not for one news cycle, but decisively enough for the attacks themselves to stop

CONFIDENTIAL CASE
  • 5+ yearsOf sustained competitor attacks
  • 18 monthsTo bring the campaign to an end
  • 100%Of negative content cleared from Google’s top 10
  • +120%Financial performance one year later

This was no longer a campaign. It had become the operating environment.

Five years of repetition had made a coordinated attack look permanent - and made hostile content part of how the company was encountered across four very different markets

  1. The scale01 / 04

The attack was designed to feel bigger than any single response

Across Mexico, Vietnam, Eastern Europe and the UAE, competitors had spent more than five years surrounding the financial company with hostile material: over 100 negative media publications, more than 1,000 fabricated reviews and at least 50 negative YouTube videos.

No single item carried the whole story. The pressure came from volume, repetition and format. A damaging article could be reinforced by a review; a video could make the same allegation feel newly discovered. Over time, coordinated black PR began to resemble independent public opinion.

A prolonged attack has to be read as a system: who encounters what, in which market, through which format, and at what point in a decision.

  2. The strategic choice02 / 04

The goal was not to outpublish the attackers. It was to make the attack stop working.

Answering more than a thousand false reviews one by one would have kept the company trapped inside its competitors’ agenda. Treating every hostile item as an isolated incident would also have missed the advantage the campaign had built over five years: it was persistent, distributed and able to move between media, review platforms, video and search.

The brief therefore had two horizons. The immediate one was to remove negative content from the Google top 10. The larger one was to change the information environment so thoroughly that continuing the attacks would no longer produce the desired effect.

Victory is not the absence of one link. It is the point at which an adversarial campaign loses visibility, credibility and strategic value.

  3. The campaign03 / 04

Four regions required one strategy - without pretending every market behaved the same.

Respology treated media coverage, review environments, YouTube results and Google visibility as connected fronts. The work had to stay disciplined enough to keep one strategic direction, yet flexible enough to respond to different languages, platforms and search landscapes across Mexico, Vietnam, Eastern Europe and the UAE.

The priority was not noise for noise’s sake. It was sustained control: concentrating effort where hostile content shaped trust, strengthening a credible picture of the company, tracking how results moved and adapting the response without losing the long-term objective. The campaign continued until the negative footprint disappeared from the top 10 - and the competitors abandoned the attacks.

Strategy sets the destination; discipline keeps pressure on the decisive surfaces; flexibility allows the response to move when the environment does.

  4. The outcome04 / 04

Eighteen months later, the information war was over.

Negative content was fully cleared from Google’s top 10, and the competitors stopped their campaign. After more than five years of sustained pressure, the company was no longer forced to meet the market through an adversary’s version of its identity.

One year later, the company’s financial performance had increased by 120%, and it had entered the top three in its industry. Reputation work did not replace commercial performance; it removed a persistent layer of manufactured distrust that had been standing between the business and the people evaluating it.

The strongest recovery is durable: the attack ends, the decision environment changes, and the business can be judged on what it actually does.

We were facing a large-scale, prolonged information war. Respology did not simply take the problem off our hands - they stayed with it until we had won. I valued the way they worked: strategy, discipline and flexibility in equal measure. In the end, we entered the top three in our industry and cleared our digital space of the attacks.
